The rounded to oval canopy, with glossy dark green foliage in summer, turns into one of the most intense autumn displays in the catalogue, with simultaneous shades of yellow, orange, red and purple. In late winter, before the leaves emerge, small red flowers appear on the bare branches — subtle but highly valued in gardens of note. It prefers full sun to part shade and adapts to a wide range of soils, including chalky ones, provided they are well drained. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant.
It is one of the species best known for its ornamental bark: as it matures, it flakes away in irregular patches of grey, greenish-brown and cream, creating a camouflage-like effect that keeps visual interest alive even in winter, without leaves. Slow to moderate growing, it typically reaches 6 to 10 metres in height in garden settings, with a naturally multi-stem habit and a broad canopy.
Its root system is comparatively restrained and non-aggressive, making it a particularly safe choice near paving, walls and underground infrastructure — an advantage over other larger species in the catalogue.
