Lagerstroemia indica
Suited for spaces where ornamental interest is required through summer. The mass bloom sets it apart from any other deciduous species, in pink, white, purple or red. In winter, the flaking bark and coloured trunks keep a visual presence. For hotel entrances, courtyards, Mediterranean gardens and smaller-scale streetscapes.
With a rounded to irregular canopy, it blooms abundantly between July and September, depending on the variety, over bright-green deciduous foliage that turns orange and red in autumn. After leaf drop, the peeling, grey to reddish-brown bark continues to give it presence. It likes full sun (it needs heat to bloom well), adapts to varied soils as long as well-drained, and becomes drought-tolerant once established.
